The Sea and all its Moods

With this online exhibition, our last before our annual National Exhibition in Melbourne this October, the exhibiting members of ASMA were invited to submit works inspired by the ever changing and ever fascinating moods of the ocean. They have responded with enthusiasm, their entries ranging from balmy summer beaches to the wildest of stormy seas. I would like to thank our membership for their continued and increasing engagement with these online
exhibitions, and I’m sure we all look forward to the next thematic display of the many talents of ASMA.

Adjudication by Guest Judge, Ross Brewer:

It was an honour to be asked to judge these works of art. I thought the theme “The Sea and all its Moods” was very inspiring and the art reflected the theme well. I grew up by the sea, sailed the oceans of the world, and live overlooking the ocean. The sea inspires me always.

Always difficult to select the best from so many fine paintings, but my selection of the top three are:

Best in show

“Turbulent Ocean” by John Perkins- White horses dancing on the sea are hard to capture. The artist has done this brilliantly and you can feel the turbulence just looking at the painting. The gulls playing in the wind illustrate the mood of enjoyment of the ocean. It is a painting you can look at for hours and hours.

Second best in show

“Moody Hues” by Greg Wardle- The depiction of the lone yacht under tight sail and the wonderful breaking waves is excellent. the painting brings you into imagining what it would be like to be out in that weather.

Third best in show

“Tidal Retreat” by Carole Elliott- The calm display of the ebbing tide and gentle surf draws you into the image wanting to barefooted and walking the beach discovering what the sea has left behind.

I would also give strong commendations to:

“The ‘Helen Denny’; After the Gale” by Jeff Rigby- The image is evocative of the joy of having escaped the gale and running free before the wind. I would love to be on the ship.

“Dangerous Salvage” by John Woodland- I love this painting. It conjures up thoughts of how dangerous the ocean can be and the bravery of seafarers.
